Running on a treadmill vs. running outside: I feel this is a topic that comes up fairly regularly. Both options have unique advantages and disadvantages; while a runner may prefer one over the other, certain conditions may cause the runner to choose the option they do not prefer.
Let's start with the advantages of running on a treadmill. One advantage is convenience. Obviously, weather happens. A runner could easily redirect their attention to the treadmill if it's cold and rainy. Then, of course, extreme weather conditions may be unsafe for even the most hardcore outdoor runner. if you live in an area with limited outdoor running options, the treadmill may be the go-to. Treadmills also offer some level of control. Speed and incline can be adjusted to add variability. Some treadmills have a user interface that allows the user to select a programmed run or have the ability to virtually interface with a trainer or group.
Some disadvantages of running on a treadmill. One major disadvantage is boredom. Running on a treadmill can get boring quickly. Lack of variation in terrain, sensory stimulation, and the feeling of progress through forward motion adds to the monotony of treadmill running. Environmental factors can also be a huge factor. The circulation of air indoors is quite poor and the fans attached to the treadmills are not particularly effective in providing sufficient cooling. If your treadmill is at home, a fairly large footprint needs to be available to fold out the treadmill or if the treadmill doesn’t fold up that footprint is now dedicated to a large piece of equipment that gets used a small percentage of time. Gyms tend to have a strange aroma, and some runners may feel out on display in a full gym. Especially if there are other gym members waiting for a treadmill to come available. the artificial environment of a gym may not provide the same mental and emotional benefits as running outside.
running outside has its own set of advantages. One of the most significant advantages is the mental health benefits. Running outside can be more mentally stimulating and provide a greater sense of well-being, thanks to exposure to nature, fresh air, and sunshine. Running outside offers more variety in terrain, which can keep your runs interesting. Running outside can also be more challenging than running on a treadmill, as you have to contend with uneven terrain, hills, wind resistance, and you have to provide your own forward motion which can lead to improved fitness and running performance.
There are also some disadvantages to running outside. Weather is a major disadvantage, as running outside can be more challenging in extreme weather conditions, such as high heat or cold temperatures, strong winds, or heavy rain. It is important to use caution when considering running in extreme weather conditions as it could be unsafe.
Many people may suggest that running on a treadmill can be safer than running outside. There may be truth to the suggestion however, I do believe that treadmills have their own safety concerns. Running outside can pose safety risks, such as traffic, uneven terrain, and the potential for injury from falls. Running on concrete or asphalt can be harder on your joints as well. Treadmills have their own safety risks as well. Treadmills are not immune to trip hazards. The user can still trip, step half on the tread / half off the tread, or have their untied shoelace get caught in the mechanics of the treadmill. Many users allow themselves to be distracted by TV, a book, or their screaming children while they run. These are distractions that could lead to miss steps or falls. Treadmills don't necessarily stop or slow down if the user were to fall. All treadmills have a kill switch but that won't keep the treadmill from shooting the user off the back if the user were to fall onto the tread. For that reason, I recommend that treadmills have a decent amount of space behind the treadmill to give the user free fall space in the event that they fall.
The choice between running on a treadmill or outside comes down to personal preference and individual goals. Some people prefer the convenience and control of a treadmill, while others find the mental and physical benefits of running outside to be more rewarding. It's worth experimenting with both to find what works best for you. Whichever you choose, prioritize your safety, wear appropriate equipment, and keep in mind that it doesn't matter how you did it. Its that you did it.
